There’s been a lot of speculation in the K-drama world right now about who the real killer is in the ongoing series The Scarecrow, starring Park Hae Soo and Lee Hee Jun. Because of that, I tried researching the Hwaseong case, which is believed to be the real-life inspiration for the drama’s Kangseong case.
In the Hwaseong case, it took investigators 33 years (three decades) to identify the real killer. The police initially accused several suspects and eventually imprisoned the wrong person, someone who has disability. The wrongly accused man’s last name was Yoon, but his full name was withheld to protect his privacy. The real killer, Lee Chun Jae, later confessed while serving a life sentence after raping and murdering his sister-in-law. One major mistake in the investigation was the belief that the killer had blood type B, when in fact, he had blood type O, one of the key reasons the case remained unsolved for so long.
As of now, The Scarecrow is only on Episode 6, but Detective Taejoo is already following clues suggesting the killer is blood type B. He removed Gi Hwan (Lee Gi Beom’s older brother) from the suspect list after learning his blood type is AB. Another lead suggests the killer works with alloy and welding and sweats heavily, which is why Taejoo asked Gi Hwan about anyone working in a factory. This led him to Lee Jong Su, a factory worker with blood type O. However, Taejoo still ruled him out based on earlier assumptions.
Taejoo’s latest suspect is Gi Beom’s friend Im Seok Man, who also works with welding and alloy and fits the “sweats a lot” clue. Taejoo then remembered his sister mentioning that the killer was limping, something that also matches Im Seok Man.
Because of these parallels, I think Im Seok Man will end up being wrongly accused, and Lee Jong Su might actually be the real killer with a blood type O.
What do you guys think?
As of now, I'll call this just an assumption, because who knows? We might meet another character who is blood type O.
